Hi Everyone! Today I have for you a character interview with characters from Reap by Casey Bond. This interview was conducted by, and first appeared on, the UtopYA Teen blog by Sara-Ann Strong.
It features the characters Crew, Gray, Kyan, and Abby, and as noted by Sara-Ann, spoilers are possible if you have not read Reap.
Before settling into the interview, how about a synopsis first?
In the Lesser village of Orchard, things are not as perfect as Abby Kelley thinks they are. When the apple harvest draws near and the Greaters’ engineered fruits become too much for one village to handle alone, reinforcements from neighboring villages are called upon.
Having to choose between her best friend, whom she has no romantic feelings for, and mysterious newcomer Crew, Abby finds herself in the middle of a harvest that she had no intention of becoming a part of. She becomes involved in a situation that threatens the strict rule of the Greaters, and just might give the Lessers hope for a better tomorrow. But, can she help the Lessers without losing Crew?
Sara-Ann: Hey! How are you guys going?
Abby: Hey Sara-Ann.
Crew: Hello, Ms. Strong.
Kyan: What’s up?
Gray: (Lifts his chin and smiles).
Sara-Ann: I’m going to head straight into some quiz Q&A, I hope you are ready. *cackles wildly*
Sara-Ann: Favourite food?
Abby: Lulu’s apple pie. Best recipe in the world.
Crew: Filet mignon and garlic potatoes.
Kyan: Abby’s soup. (Stomach growls)
Gray: Anything Abby cooks. *Smiles*
Sara-Ann: Sweet or sour?
Crew: Both. I want it all.
Kyan: Sweet. (nods head)
Gray: Depends on the situation. (grins)
Sara-Ann: Favourite colour, hobby, book and song?
Abby: Purple like the color of the morning sky. Swimming. I wish we had books in Orchard. Anything Lulu sang to me.
Crew: Red. Collecting fine art. The Olympian Charter. Praise Olympus.
Kyan: Green. Hanging with Abby. No time for books, not that we have any. Anything my mama sings.
Gray: Blue (Looks at Abby). Doing anything I can with Abs. Anything anti-Greater now that I know what’s going on. Anything Abby sings.
Sara-Ann: If you had a super power what would it be?
Abby: I want to fly! *Claps excitedly*
Crew: I would want to make fire.
Kyan: Speed. Definitely speed.
Gray: Super strength. Someone has to catch Abby when she falls. (Nudges Abby)
Sara-Ann: If you could be with anyone anywhere, who would you be with and where would you be?
Abby: I would be with Lulu for a little while, maybe sitting on the front porch of our cabin. (Wipes tear)
Crew: I would visit my grandfather if he were alive, and I would meet him in the great hall of Olympus.
Kyan: I’d hang out with my folks. I don’t see them enough with all the work in the village.
Gray: I’d want to be with Abs. It doesn’t matter where. Just as long as she’s with me.
Sara-Ann: Abby, what is your favourite quote?
Abby: “You reap what you sow.” *giggles*
Let’s stir the pot shall we? Muhahaha I’m bad to the bone!
Sara-Ann: Boys, how well do you think you know Abby?
Kyan: I’ve known her since we were in diapers.
Crew: *Sniffs* I think I know her pretty well.
Gray: I pay attention.
Sara-Ann: Abby, how well do you know your “protectors”? Do you think that you need to be protected at all or do you think that they are just a group of boys really excited to put on their bad boy superman capes on and fly to the rescue?
Abby: Ha! Well, I would agree with the superhero thing, but I keep getting myself into sticky situations. A couple of those did require saving of the damsel in distress, namely me. So, I’m glad to have these guys around.
Sara-Ann: Crew, what was your first impression of Orchard?
Crew: I was surprised, not of the village itself, but of the Lessers. My father had always told me that they were grotesque, completely ignorant and barely able to function. That was the reason he said we needed them. They were only good for work. I found the Lessers to be quite different from that description. They were kind, intelligent and quite capable of living life on their own, free from Greater interference.
Sara-Ann: Kyan, do you remember your first impression of Crew?
Kyan: I didn’t like the guy. I’m not sure that I do now, to be honest about it.
Sara-Ann: Gray, we all know not to judge a book by its cover *giggle-snort*, what was your first impression of the Palace in Olympus?
Gray: I’m a Greater. I was born in Everest. But the Palace and those who inhabit it are pretentious, entitled jerks.
Crew: *Clears throat*
Gray: *Stares at Crew*
Sara-Ann: Abby, I caught wind of a resistance going on * wiggles eyebrows*, anything to say about that?
Abby: *Smiles* No comment. Casey might kill me and I’m way too young a character to die. But, you’ll learn more in August!
Sara-Ann: If tomorrow you woke up as the King or Queen of Olympus, what would be the first thing you would do or change?
Abby: I would free the Lessers, admit to all what was going on with the Harvest. I’d seek a peaceful solution.
Crew: I might be King of Olympus one day. I will always put her needs first. I would surround myself with advisors to resolve any outstanding issues.
Kyan: Withdraw from Lesser lands and leave them the *#&% alone.
Gray: Set the record straight. Everyone needs to know what’s going on. Period. *Stares at Crew*
Sara-Ann: I’ve got one more question for you all, would you rather be a Greater or a Lesser and why?
Abby: Lesser. I’d hate to be anything but what I am. I may be part of both worlds, but I only claim the one that raised me.
Crew: Greater. It is my heritage.
Kyan: Lesser. We’re stronger than the Greaters any day.
Gray: Neither. I just want to be myself.
Sara-Ann: Thanks for letting me pick your brains!!! I sincerely wish you all the best in your journey and that Casey won’t give you guys too much trouble! Gray, thank you again for being such a great book boyfriend. *winks*
Abby: Thanks, Sara-Ann. You are so sweet! (Hugs your neck)
Crew: Thank you, Ms. Strong. (bows)
Kyan: Thanks. (Shakes your hand)
Gray: Nods. (Picks up your hand and places a gentle kiss on the back of it)
